TESOL Variable teaching materials

In case of young learners start to learn new language, it’s hard to keep their concentration over 20 minutes, teachers also have to keep their interests. So it’s necessary to them to have a interesting TESOL learning method during class instead of only whiteboard-writing. Especially for younger age students, their concentration only can maintain no longer than 10 minutes. An interesting class can make students attractive in what they are going to learn. Moreover, it will stimulate their curiosities to discover more about the language. In my perspective, TESOL variable teaching materials are needed for young English learners.

Firstly, variable teaching tools and materials allow teachers to design a interesting and playable activities in class. Games should be designed with clear rules and easy to understand, so that young learners are able to play. Teachers could use 1-2 different activities or games to motivate students. For example, use flashcards, magic bag or beanbag in a 40 minutes class.

Secondly, some teaching material like block graph and Venn diagram could help students understand the connection of math and logic skills and practice their logical intelligence in a visual way. Tools like flashcards and real objects can practice student’s spatial intelligence, and they can understand better through visual senses. When teacher tells a story, is more easy for students to understand the content with a lot of pictures and materials.

Also, teaching tools and materials could be well used in natural approach. Not only visual sense is used in language learning, to touch, to smell, to taste and to hear is also important for young learners. For example, let them to smell different flowers, have them pet different animal, let them sense the world. The more senses are engaged during the process, the better students can conquer the second language.

As a result, teacher who want to teach young age learners should able to know how to use different materials during a class and be flexible to use the tools into the performance during their learning process.
